Quick answer

No. Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2 and does not run on the original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite or Switch OLED. If you upgrade to Switch 2, your old Joy-Con can still be used for every sport except Skateboarding, which needs Joy-Con 2.

Short answer: no. Switch Sports Resort only runs on Nintendo Switch 2.

Which consoles can play it?

ConsoleCan play Switch Sports Resort?
Nintendo Switch 2Yes
Nintendo Switch (original)No
Nintendo Switch OLEDNo
Nintendo Switch LiteNo

The original Switch, Switch OLED and Switch Lite all belong to the first Switch family, so none of them can run Switch 2 exclusives.

What Switch 1 owners can reuse

If you're moving up to Switch 2, you don't have to start from scratch on controllers.

That means a family with spare original Joy-Con can cover most sports for extra players. For Skateboarding — including the Skate Sprint multiplayer races — every player needs their own Joy-Con 2. Our controller guide breaks this down sport by sport.

Options if you only own a Switch 1

  1. Keep playing Nintendo Switch Sports (2022). It's the previous game in the series and runs on all Switch models. It doesn't include Wuhu Island, Island Crown or the leisure sports.
  2. Buy the Switch 2 bundle. Nintendo sells a Switch 2 bundle that includes a full download of Switch Sports Resort and a 3-month Nintendo Switch Online Individual Membership. Nintendo of America lists the savings as $27.98 compared with buying each item separately, while supplies last.
  3. Buy the game on its own. The digital edition is listed at $49.99 on Nintendo's US store.

Before you buy

  • Online play costs extra. Online modes such as Casual Online Play and Pro League need a Nintendo Switch Online membership.
  • Leave room to move. Nintendo recommends wearing wrist straps and leaving enough space around you while playing.
  • Check your controller count. Each player needs a controller, and extra Joy-Con 2 are sold separately. See how multiplayer works.

Common questions

›Is there a Switch 1 version of Switch Sports Resort?

No. Nintendo describes it as a new entry coming exclusively to Nintendo Switch 2. There is no Switch 1 version and Nintendo hasn't announced one.

›Does Switch Sports Resort work on Switch Lite?

No. The Switch Lite is part of the original Switch family, and the game only runs on Nintendo Switch 2.

›Is Switch Sports Resort an upgrade to Nintendo Switch Sports?

It's a separate game, not a Switch 2 Edition or paid upgrade of the 2022 Nintendo Switch Sports. Nintendo hasn't announced any upgrade path or discount for owners of the earlier game.

›Can I play in handheld mode?

Nintendo's store page lists TV mode and tabletop mode as supported. Handheld mode isn't listed, which makes sense for a game built around motion controls with detached Joy-Con.
