Quick answer

Island Crown is Switch Sports Resort's offline single-player mode. In each of the nine competitive sports you start in 20th place and beat CPU rivals to climb to 1st. Then you face that sport's Island Champion, and after that its Island Legend — in Boxing, the Legend is Matt from the original Wii Sports. Wins earn Spocco Points and customization items.

Island Crown is where Switch Sports Resort tests your skills. It's a ladder for each sport: climb through the rankings, beat the champion, then take on a legend.

How Island Crown works

Each of the nine competitive sports has its own separate ladder:

  1. Start at 20th place. Your first opponents are the lowest-ranked CPU players on the island.
  2. Climb to 1st. Win matches to move up the rankings.
  3. Beat the Island Champion. Reaching the top unlocks a match against that sport's champion.
  4. Beat the Island Legend. After the champion, each sport has a legend — the hardest opponent in the mode.

Rank skips: jumping five places

A winning streak is the fastest way up the ladder. We're testing exactly how long a streak needs to be before the skip appears, and what a loss does to your position.

Matt, the Boxing Legend

Matt is the infamously tough boxer from the original Wii Sports, and he's back as the Island Legend for Boxing. Nintendo calls him out by name on the store page. Expect him to be the hardest fight in the mode — our dedicated "How to Beat Matt" guide is being written from real matches.

Rewards

  • Spocco Points — spend them at the Item Center on outfits and accessories.
  • Customization items — Nintendo confirms Island Crown earns you customization options for your Mii or Sportsmate.
  • Achievements — reviews report five achievements per sport, replacing the stamps from Nintendo Switch Sports.

Tips before you start

These are general pointers based on how the mode is structured, not tested strategies for specific opponents:

  • Learn the controls in Casual play first. Island Crown opponents get tougher fast; a few relaxed matches help you find the timing.
  • Chase streaks. Because consecutive wins can unlock a five-place jump, it pays to warm up before a session rather than playing cold.
  • Listen to the champion. The tips the Island Champion gives during your climb point you toward what their match will demand.
  • Rotate sports. Each sport has its own ladder, so you can switch to another one when you hit a wall and come back later.
